Moles are a very common experience that most people will share over the course of their lives; in fact, most people will get 10-40 moles on their body over the course of their lives. A lot of these moles may be harmless, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be removed, especially if they’re uncomfortable or unattractive. What’s worse is that some moles aren’t harmless! Moles that are particularly large, discolored, or misshapen could be signs of melanoma. If this is the case, they should be examined and likely removed by a doctor as soon as possible. It’s important to get these examined early, as the impact of catching potentially cancerous cells and eliminating them early in the disease’s stage of development is well known.

Can I have moles just reduced instead of fully removed?
Some patients who come into our clinic want to get their moles treated for one reason or another, but do not necessarily want their moles removed. They may want to keep their moles for specific reasons – maybe they think their mole makes them more attractive or adds to their “look,” or maybe they just have a sort of attachment to a mole that they have had for years or longer. These patients may request a reduction of their moles instead of a total removal.

While moles technically can be reduced, since the tools that remove moles can theoretically be used to simply make them smaller, this is not a procedure that we do at our mole removal clinics. What’s more, no doctor should do a procedure like this for their patients. Mole reduction “care” would not actually solve any of the problems that moles can pose, and in some cases can serve to simply make the problem worse! For starters, if a mole may be cancerous, no doctor should be willing to leave cancerous cells there! In this case, the doctor should urge their patient to get treatment, and should always take extra care to remove every cancerous cell in the patient’s body, as much as possible.

Mole “reduction” isn’t just a bad idea in the case of cancer, though. It doesn’t help for more benign, flesh-colored moles either. When moles are tampered with by complicated health care procedures like our radiofrequency ablation technology, this can activate the mole cells. When the mole cells are “activated” like this, they start to grow and replicate. This means that if the mole cells are reduced but not all the way removed, they can grow back, sometimes even bigger than the original mole was in the first place! All in all, don’t bother asking your doctor for mole reduction – it’s not a helpful treatment, and no doctor should perform it, because it is very likely to not actually help anything.

Not sure what you’ll do with the rest of your day after your mole removal treatment? Not to worry – we’ve got you covered! Hopefully our suggestions down below will help make your treatment day one to remember!
