We hear it all the time, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” This saying is actually incredibly accurate. Apples, along with many other fruits and vegetables, contain countless vitamins and minerals that help keep people healthy. During this tumultuous time, it is a good opportunity to make some positive health changes. It seems to be easiest to change our diet above all else. Below are some simple and relatively affordable changes people can make.
- Keep a balanced diet: Follow the general rule of having more vegetables compared to the amount of carbs and meat. Fats should take up the least amount of room on your plate.
- Smoothies: Homemade smoothies are affordable and a great way to consume lots of fruits and vegetables quickly. Most grocery stores sell frozen bags of fruit for a low price. Mango, pineapples, bananas, and strawberries provide a lot of vitamin C and calcium while being refreshing and fruity.
- Drink lots of water: Water is the best way to flush toxins out of the body and keeps you hydrated. Make it a goal to consume at least 64oz. of water a day. Water helps clear up acne, makes you feel fuller longer, and has countless other benefits.
- Get creative: Chip and hummus dips are delicious but can be enjoyed with pretzels, carrots, bell peppers, or cucumbers for a healthy alternative to chips.
- Bake what you can: Frying food can also add unnecessary calories and fats to your diet. Bake vegetables in the oven with seasonings and drizzle olive oil over them simply so they do not stick to the pan. Consider switching out butter in the pan for olive oil or other smart fats.
